History

The YMS celebrates 50 years in 2019!

The Young Music Society was established in 1969 by Judith Clingan as a community organisation run by volunteers with family memberships, in order to offer the young people of Canberra an opportunity to discover and explore their creativity in a fun and safe environment, building positive self-empowerment, and a positive expressive outlet through music and the arts. The major focus of each years events are built around holiday music schools in addition to weekly programs in composition, choral singing, concert band, community concerts and affordable instrument hire targeted at students.

The current society is a modern,  self-funded, non-profit, community based organisation who continue to provide access, education, artistry, inclusion, excellence and enjoyment to the young people of Canberra through quality music-based projects, events and activities. Though most of the events and activities take place in Canberra, many young people now come from all over Australia to participate in the exciting opportunities that are created.

The YMS office is open from 10am – 4pm Tuesday to Thursday at the Belconnen Arts Centre by a small team of part-time staff who are happy to tell you more about the work and history of the YMS.

If you are an alumni of the YMS as a student or teacher, we would love to make contact with you and hear some of your stories.
